Many famous orchid

for example in 1912, at a joint meeting and
show, the following awards were made for orchid
group displays:-

Silver-Gilt Medal

The North of England Horticultural Society’s
Silver-Gilt Medal
Cypher and Sons
The North of England Horticultural Society’s
Large Silver Medal
A.J.Keeling and Sons
The North of England Horticultural Society’s
Large Bronze Medal
mention was also made of:-
"A marvellous display of Phalaenopsis
schilleriana and various Cattleyas " staged by
Messrs Sander & Sons
HOWEVER, MANY AWARDS
WERE ALSO GIVEN TO ORDINARY MEMBERS FOR
EXCELLENCE OF FORM AND CULTURE
It was the practice of the society to
have painted any orchids upon which our own
awards were bestowed, and we still have some 700
or so paintings which date from around the turn
of the century up to the second world war.
The links at the bottom of this paragraph will
take you to slide shows of several examples of
these works of art.
If you would
like more information on the paintings we
will be pleased to assist.
A superb quality CD of them is now
available at a price of £12.00 posted
anywhere in the world, if you would like to
order a copy, please send a cheque or money
order for this amount in UK pound sterling
(payable to The North of England Orchid
Society) to Mr. C Knowles, 2 Broadhill

bygone times, we use the old word
